The Stepping Stones Model School

Situated at Uquo, Esit Eket LGA, Akwa Ibom State the school provides an outstanding level of education to over 120 nursery and primary aged children. With support from Stepping Stones Nigeria's supporters, the Local Government and village chiefs the first 4 classrooms of the school were completed in September 2006. 50% of the pupils in attendance pay a small monthly fee, which is used to cover teacher's wages with the remaining 50% of children given scholarships. The poorest children are also supplied with free uniforms and books. There are currently 29 orphans in attendance at the school, with the majority of pupils coming from a very under privileged background. The head teacher of the school is supported by a staff team of 4 teachers, 3 teaching assistants, 3 security men, a nurse, cleaner and computer assistant

The School Classroom

All teachers at the Stepping Stones Model School have been trained in the latest teaching methods including the use of synthetic phonics. Special emphasis is placed by the teachers on allowing the children to learn through play. The school is well equipped with a wide variety of toys, books, games etc, which the children adore playing with. All tables, chairs, building blocks etc were prepared by a team of local carpenters using locally sourced hard wood

The School Farm

Pupils at the school are taught sustainable farming practices by teaching staff on the school farm. Crops grown include pineapple, water leaf, pumpkin, maize, cassava and beans. In addition to this Stepping Stones Nigeria volunteers have planted numerous mango, apple, peach, pear, bannana, plantain and paw-paw trees. All profits from the produce of the farm is ploughed back into meeting the running costs of the school.

The Playground

Pupils at the Stepping Stones Model School are given plenty of opportunity to play on the school's playground, which comprises of swings, slides, see-saws, climbing castle and tricycle track. The children love their playground with play time being especially joyful (and chaotic!). All the playground equipment was constructed by a small team of local carpenters and welders, thus ensuring that the benefits of the school reach beyond the school site.
